INTRODUCTION
The registered name of the organisation is Karoo Centre for Human Rights, Education, Research and Development. The organisation is also known as the Karoo Centre for Human Rights or KCFHR or KCHR. These are non-registered shortened names. The Karoo Centre for Human Rights, Education, Research and Development (KCHR) is a legal and human rights education and training organisation. KCHR was established on 28 February 1998 in the rural town of Beaufort West, Western Cape Province. KCHR is registered under the Companies Act, 71 of 2008 and as a non-profit organisation under the Non-Profit Organisations Act, 71 of 1997. A memorandum of incorporation and certificate of registration is the founding and guiding documents of the institution. It has been at the forefront of pioneering paralegal work by developing accessible training resources and materials. KCHR is operational in and around the rural areas of the Western Cape (Eden Karoo); Northern Cape (Upper Karoo); Eastern Cape (Midlands Karoo) as well as the False Karoo in the Free State Province. This non-governmental organisation consists of a multi-skilled diverse group of individuals committed to engendering access to justice, a human rights approach to criminal justice and development, linked to like-minded organisations, structures and networks. |
